Finally it’s Friday. Earlier this week, Fall arrived. Mom was at work when it happened and probably dealing with some crisis when the exact minute came and went at 5:43 am. She’s evoking fall feelings today on her day off, even though the weather isn’t fall weather yet, beginning with adding nutmeg and cardamon to her morning tea and while that cools, preparing to give Viola her morning combings. When Viola’s third morning nap ends, that is.
Later, before the sun starts slanting light through windows that don’t see that until this time of year and after Mom disposes of the latest round of ant visitors in the spare room, she’s thinking of making biscotti using a recipe she found that doesn’t require eggs. We learned a few things during that month and a half we didn’t have a refrigerator, one being that lots of yummy things can be made without eggs. She found an amazing pumpkin loaf recipe that turned out better than our standard recipe that does use eggs. And an egg-less brownie recipe that Dad really likes. For us, this is the best time of year for experimental baking.
Between now and then, this seems like a good time to bring back out a thick fleece blanket or two so a certain boy can stake an early claim to a fall weather fort. Oh who are we kidding? No one in their right cat mind would even think of taking his fort. He probably wouldn’t mind. He’s a sharing kind of boy and a great fall weather snuggler.
