Let’s talk . . . about my brother. You know him as Quint. He’s . . . just my brother. He’s soft and gentle and makes a great pillow most of the time. He never bats at me or bites me, though he does that to one of my big sisters, who probably deserves more than she gets.

My brother Quint is the cleanest cat I know. He’s twice the size of me and perfectly clean all the time. He even cleans me, sometimes, and I keep very clean myself. Mom says if Quint cleaned the bedding half as much as he cleaned me, she’d never have to do laundry. Not sure what point she’s trying to make there. Laundry? What’s laundry?

When the weather is cooler, definitely NOT like it was last week, we sit close side-by-side and have secret conversations. Or, we won’t say a word. We just enjoy each other’s company. That’s the best kind of brother to have.

But, since it’s supposed to be hot this week, too (not as blazing, scorching hot as last week, Mom reminds me), we’re not snuggling together.

He can have his own spot and I have mine. No chance of my brother snuggling here with me. This spot is all mine, even if that does mean I have to take my own bath.

Well, this isn’t supposed to happen.

Yesterday morning, a couple of coworkers swore they heard a kitten meowing while we were all working in this incredibly LOUD industrial warehouse we work in. And finally, someone came to investigate and sure enough, after pulling up the metal grating that runs down the center of the cement floor, there huddled against conduit was a terrified, hissing, spitting baby girl. Estimated age is around 3 to 3 1/2 weeks and after fishing her out and Mom making sure this softest of soft wee babies got some water, one coworker took her home for the day’s safekeeping and another coworker, who is very, very good with cats, took her home to keep her and make her a member of her family.

About three weeks ago, a feral cat was seen with a new litter of kittens at one of the loading docks outside the warehouse. The next day, the cat and kittens were gone. A couple of weeks ago, cat poop was found near a time clock inside. Last Thursday, someone saw a black kitten running through the aisles where fast forklifts rumble to and fro day and night. As for what the mother would be eating, well, we’ve had a mouse problem for months now. Any warehouse that has open bay doors for semi trailers and is located near open fields probably does.

We’ll all keep an eye and ear out for more kittens. No, Mom isn’t going to bring one home if any more are found. This little one could have had the pick of five or six or more homes if it had wanted to. There’ll be a home for who ever else pops up!
