Last week was an interesting one for us, one that Quint would call anything but interesting. Mom came home from her usual 10-hour work day and found Quint hiding in his blanket fort as usual, except the swollen mouth he has was anything but usual. Though Mom had to be back at work in a little over 9 hours, she packed him up and with Dad, drove across town to the only emergency vet clinic available at that hour.
Before leaving she tried calling that clinic, if for no other reason than to learn about their Covid-19 procedures which was not covered well at all on their website, but after sitting on hold for 35 minutes, she decided to risk all by making the drive.
Once at the emergency vet clinic, Dad called and again, we sat on hold. Finally, we were told they were completely overbooked and were diverting emergencies to another clinic down in Oregon and a good 45-to-60 minute drive in rush hour traffic. They wouldn’t even come out to look at Quint’s swollen mouth.
To say Mom was upset would have been an understatement. She was tired from standing all day at work, she needed to be back at work soon, hadn’t eaten or gotten any sleep, it was well past dark, and it was pouring rain. Quint was making little, “I hurt” sounds and both Mom and Dad were in tears. There was no way to make the drive to the other clinic.
So, we drove back home and sat up with Quint for most of the night. Unable to take a day off from work, at 4 a.m. Mom headed to work and Dad gathered phone numbers of an assortment of places that might squeeze in an appointment for Quint. And scheduled a Lyft ride to get there, because Dad can no longer drive.
And at 7:30 a.m. fortune smiled on Quint with an afternoon opening available at our favorite vet clinic! Sure, it was lightly snowing and not so lightly raining when Dad arrived with him and due to Covid-19, he had to sit outside, but he had been told to dress warm and he did just that.
Quint was seen and given antibiotics and some pain medication. His diagnosis wasn’t what Mom feared (broken jaw from a fall) or what Dad thought (abscessed tooth/teeth) but out-and-out bad teeth all around. We knew that about him, having had to have several little front teeth removed a few years ago. He has a dental appointment in April, the absolute soonest one could be scheduled, and as of yesterday, Quint thinks he might like Mom, the evil deliverer of yucky medicine, once more, though she’d be happy just to hear him purr again.

How scary – I’m so sorry that Quint is having teeth problems. I’m glad you have an appointment set up though. I’m hoping that Quint will feel better soon (and am hoping he can be squeezed in a little earlier).
We hope Quint is feeling better. What an awful mess that had to be trying to get him seen by a Vet.
The Florida Furkids
How unfortunate to have to make that drive, then not get any help at the end of it!
Poor Quint; we know the difference some bad teeth removed can make for our kitty friends, so we’ll keep our paws crossed and purrs coming for you until you get your dental.
Oh no, we’re so very sorry you have to go through this. Purrs for Quint.
What an ordeal and it’s twice as hard when a furbaby is in pain. Maybe a cancellation will come up and he can have his dental earlier. We’re sending purrs and hugs.
We’re so sorry for what you had to go through. Purrs and hugs for you all.
What a horrible day for everyone! We’re sending purrs and pawsitives your way for an end to the pain for poor Quint. Hugs all around.
Oh, my goodness, what a predicament, and pretty scary when you kept hitting walls with care and timing. So glad it wasn’t an expensive emergency–and you didn’t have to pay a big emergency fee–and Quint feels better.
Poor Quint, that mouth pain is awful and we hope maybe a cancellation comes up and you can get him in sooner.
Poor Quint – sending healing purrs his way.
We are sending Purrayers for Quint! Sore teeth are NOT fun. We are also purraying that he can get in and get his teeth fixed sooner than April!
Poor Quint! I hope the antibiotics help.
What an awful ordeal. I will add Quint to my prayer list. You should do a go fund me for the dental – I will help promote it. XO
Sending Quint (and Mom & Dad) lots of purrayers and Power of the Paw. Glad you found him some care at a place you were familiar with.
What a rotten day you all had. We are so very sorry, sweet friends. We are also sad that Quint’s mouth is hurting, and hope a cancellation comes up soon so he can get an earlier appointment. Purrs to you all. XO
Poor Quint. Tooth problems are painful!
My human really hates the veterinary protocols right now. The way things are being run, the veterinary profession is TOTALLY failing its patients right now. 🙁
Quint we really love you and still have your paintings you did for us in happier times. We hope you feel better and can get those teeth taken care off. We so agree with Summer that Vets all over are completely losing touch with the needs of their patients. At ours only one will allow us in with our cats! Totally unacceptable especially with the cost. If we wear a mask and have our temp checked what is the biggie? The supermarket checkers seem alright. ARGH! Purrs Quint
Poor Quint! I hope the medicines help him…and maybe he can get in sooner to the vet to get those teeth taken care of. ~Ernie
OMG what a day! So thankful to hear that Quint now has meds and hopefully is feeling better until he can be seen again! You must have been exhausted yourself physically & mentally! Hope you were able to get some rest later!
