Mom’s home from work today and trying to get a bunch of little things done that she regrettably put off doing on her last day off. Caulking baseboard cracks against ants, swapping out old ant traps for fresh ones, creating havoc and making headlines in the general ant universe, and because secretly we think she likes it, she’s re-organizing a big closet that someone who shall remain nameless might have left in disarray.
She’s also hand-washing laundry because, yes, our almost 4 month old washer has already broken and according to the warranty service guy, needs a part that’s 10 to 14 days out just to get the part in, “another week or so” before it can be installed.
Rumor has it if you quickly go look up the word “livid” in the dictionary, Mom’s photo will pop up as a visual definition.
Viola, on the other much calmer hand, is waiting for attention. Or maybe a full brushing. Or a simple pat on the head. Who knows? She looks like she’s waiting for something and Mom’s too busy to stop long enough to figure it out.
Viola, why aren’t you napping? Isn’t this your napping time of day?
Now, Mom’s downstairs in the kitchen, cleaning up after whipping up a coffee cake to cut up for work lunches. Coffee cakes are inexpensive to make. She uses a simple recipe from an old Betty Crocker cookbook and adds fruit if she has any. Meanwhile, worried Viola thinks Mom’s making too much noise by muttering. Viola’s not a fan of muttering, another similarity to her older sister Tessa.
“Viola, I’m not really muttering, or maybe just a little. That bothers you too? You know, you could go upstairs with Tessa who’s napping up there and avoiding all unmentionable words being used. Of course, you’d be in the same room with her. . .”
Kitchen clean and the obligatory cat at the counter window is complete. Viola, you look like you’re annoyed. Or maybe you’re waiting for something? What is it?
Something, all right. You just had to mention her name, didn’t you?
